First and foremost, parenting and caregiving are about relationships, rather than sets of skills. However, at times, there can be challenges in building these relationships or maintaining them in the face of changes.
Often, we imagine what the parenting experience may be like – who our children will be and how we might feel about or interact with them. However, the realities of each parent, each child, and each family’s experiences may vary widely. These relationships can take on a shape we may not have expected. They could be affected by differences in temperaments, learning, sensory, and/or attention issues, neurodiversity, and social emotional needs that may not match our own way of interacting, our histories, and our lived experiences. Parents and caregivers may feel pressure and have expectations outside themselves, as well as other challenges that may compound parenting stresses.
Our work together, informed by your sociocultural values and experiences, will look to deepen your understanding of your relationships, capacity to reflect, and support your wellbeing and empathy as a parent/caregiver, family member and individual.
